General locations are given. Specific locations are on file in the Master Site Files of both states.
The artifacts are extremely rare remnants of one of the most important and dramatic cultural contacts in human history. The Spanish of Europe and Natives of North America met and the rest is history.
1Ce308 is a very important Native / Spanish contact site in Cherokee County in northeast Alabama. Although the site is multicomponent, the European contact portion of the site is the most intriguing. The site, located in a plowed field, was dug by collectors. Caleb Curren, Keith Little, and George Lankford contacted the collectors and made photographs of a sample of the artifacts. The following photographs of artifacts are from that period of contact likely dating to the 1500s.
The primary reference for the site is:
1Ce308: A Protohistoric Site on the Upper Coosa River in Alabama. Journal of Alabama Achaeology 27(2). Moundville, Alabama.
This is one of a series of field notes for archeological researchers. The notes are free. Pass it on if you please.
