We were searching for 16th century Spanish Contact sites in central Alabama. We found many potentials. With funding restrictions, we had to decide on a few to conduct test excavations. 1Wx169 was one of those chosen. Spanish artifacts were not found but a wealth of information from the Woodland and Mississippian Periods (circa 1000-1600 AD) native populations was discovered. The site is a large multicomponent native town. The following pages contain a sample of photographs from the excavations.
